The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) held an online opening ceremony of the activity of building green families on June 5, World Environment Day, to guide families to live a green and low-carbon life.

The activity was designed to promote stories of the model families contributing to environmental protection, and share their experiences in conserving energy and resources, improving public environmental sanitation, protecting the ecological environment and fostering civilized social customs.

The families were recommended from the Looking for the Most Beautiful Family campaign initiated by the ACWF.

Ouyang Xiangping's family in Beijing made a rainwater collection system for watering flowers and a waste water recycling system for recycling water resources.

Tian Qingsheng's family in North China's Tianjin Municipality helped transform the lighting equipment of residential buildings in the community, saving a great deal of electricity.

Zhong Congrong's family in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality volunteered to pick up rubbish, inspiring more people to protect the environment.

Li Ji's family in North China's Shanxi Province held a special "bicycle wedding," advocating a new trend of low carbon marriages.

Song Wei's family in Central China's Hunan Province has been engaged in voluntary services of the pollution treatment of Xiangjiang River for many years.

Li Rongfu's family in Northeast China's Jilin Province built a 260-hectare botanical garden that contains nearly 10,000 books, over 1,000 kinds of plants and more than 100 bird species.

During the online ceremony, two experts were invited to comment on the environmental protection actions of the above families and publicize environmentally-friendly knowledge, including how to save water and electricity and read the energy or water efficiency labels on household appliances, green commuting and consumption, garbage sorting, wildlife protection and healthy dining methods in a bid to guide households to participate in building green families and raise public awareness of ecological civilization based on daily life.

The Green Family Building Action is one of the series of activities of building green lifestyles led by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The ACWF, the NDRC, the State Administration for Market Regulation and four government ministries jointly issued an action plan for building green families in January 2020, which stipulates the building standards applicable to urban and rural areas and guides families on how to practice a simple, moderate, green and low-carbon lifestyle.
